Book Review: BLADE LORD by S.J. HARTLAND

Hello Readers, welcome back to my blog.

I discovered Voracious Readers Only recently. They are an organisation that connects reviewers to authors and publishers. You indicate the genre you prefer to read and they send you books in those categories to pick from daily and from what I have surmised so far all the books are e-books. I usually pick books after I have read the synopsis and I was very interested when I read the synopsis of this story.

SUMMARY

She can save his soul if she sacrifices her own – but he’s destined to never remember her name . . .

A fated warrior . . .

Decallion is the only blade lord whose soul is not tethered to one of the rulers of the Circle Kingdoms. That makes him the most valuable warrior in the realm … it also makes him the most vulnerable.

When the Valour Corp escorting him to the temple for the tethering ceremony is ambushed, Decallion is abducted and sold in the lawless Guildlands – an act that will change the fate of Kingdoms.

For in a land where women control the power of words, a single blade lord can turn the tide of battle. And whoever controls Decallion’s soul can own the world.

An assassin after vengeance . . .

Sinnabar is a temple fura; an assassin sent after men who unlawfully learn to read and write. To save Decallion, she’ll take down the Citadel of the Blade Lords, betray everyone and everything she believes in, and destroy the Circle Kingdoms.

But he has no idea who she is.

A Kingdom in peril

Across the abyss where the undying fire protects the Circle Kingdoms from the mysterious and corrupt Shadow Kingdom, an immortal tyrant is preparing for his return.

If Sinnabar kills the citadel master, no one will stand in Kayarax the Destroyer’s way. For what can one temple fura, a young blade lord, and an outlaw with poisoned blood do against a sorcerer who cannot be killed.

Blade Lord

You can own his skill and even his soul if you’re prepared to pay the price.

Decallion is a young Blade Lord, and he hasn’t been bound to any ruling country yet, as is the custom in the circle kingdoms. His dream is to follow his duty, by training well and serving whoever his soul becomes bound to when the time is right. Decallion is ignorant of the missing pieces of his life and his origin. He has fallen in love with Sinnabar twice in his life, once as a teenager and the second time as a young man. He does not remember either because the citadel that controls Blade lords has taken this from him.

Sinnabar is not fortunate enough to forget that the man she loves has been taken away from her twice because the citadel believes that Decallion is bound for greater glory which has to be directed by the citadel master. Sinnabar is a princess of one of the circle kingdoms but she has no power to hold on to her man against the might of the citadel. In her fury, she decides that she will take back Decallion and destroy the citadel by partnering with a wanted ex-blade lord whose blood has been poisoned by the citadel called Gideon.

Everything goes wrong with Sinnabar’s plan for vengeance against the citadel when her brother and the love of her life fall into the wrong hands. What lengths will Sinnabar go to for her to get them back? She will do anything she can but nothing goes as planned, everything she attempts goes from bad to worse.

Decallion is the most pitiful character and he is so innocent of the world’s evil. It broke my heart to see him trust easily and be betrayed over and over again. I gave the story 4 out of 5 stars because the story gave me such a heart warming feeling at the end. Decallion was just so righteous; it was sometimes infuriating for my realistic mind. The story left me with a lot of questions though, like who exactly is Decallion and where is he from? Will Decallion remember Sinnabar? Will Sinnabar leave Gideon if Decallion remembers her?

I will be interested in finding out the answers to these questions in Hartland’s next book in the Decallion series. The book is well written and the story flows so well and the author is very good at creating a new world for discovery.
